Do Artists need to be pornographers?

Sun Jan 6, 2008, 3:06 AM
I came across a deviant art site today. Very little on it some basic pen sketches, kind like how i started out. The artists had only been on here for a few months and had probably only posted 10 or so deviations.
Yet they had 100's more page views than me, loads of watchers already and more comments than they knew what to do with.
The only difference between their early work and mine is that theirs seemed to be pronographic in nature. Mine i feel has come on a long way in terms of skill and maturity and their fledgling work is still more popular because of its nature.
Maybe i'm coming across as slightly bitter over this. Its probably very childish but i really resent the fact sticking sex into your work immediately makes it popular because aparently thats what half the people here are for. I checked these guys watchers and many of them didn't even have art of their own, just a collection of pornographic art in their favourites.
Its not that i don't think art should be sexy, or that porn isnt art, but i needed to have this rant because my head was about to explode with how little this world balances out.

Finding my way

Fri Nov 16, 2007, 6:46 AM
I've finally found my pace with my course, i'm sketching regularly, building my reference books, getting into my school work, organising the world around me. Basically pulling away from neutral gear.

I shaln't be posting my reference books as creative as i feel i've been with them they aren't always strictly montage they include some complete unadulterated images. I shall be posting my sketch books soon in my scraps and i'll finish uploading the pics from my ceramics.

Update

Fri Nov 2, 2007, 4:13 PM
I haven't written anything in a long while so i thought it was about time. I'm at art college now and loving it. I have two amazing tutors, Doom Cookie and the Rambler both of which are or have been succesful proffesional artsist and i learn loads off them every day.

Its good really because the feed back i got from deviant art has been a bit of a dissapointment. I was lured here by the promise it would help me grow as an artist and so far its only been friends that have offered any criticism of my work. Nevertheless i still find this place inspirational so i'm staying.
